My first review blog will be for Cop Out. This craptastic film is directed by Kevin Smith and stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.
Before I talk about this movie, I need to give you some background. I have been a HUGE Kevin Smith fan for years and years. Dogma and Clerks were some of my biggest inspirations for wanting to be a filmmaker. I have been to multiple signings and screening for Kevin Smith. I can be seen in the photo below as the kid in the back.
I watched this movie, even after hearing just how bad it was. I knew he had only directed it, but did not write it. Boy was that evident. It was like every buddy cop movie I have ever seen, but not good. I enjoy movies like Lethal Weapon, Turner and Hooch, Beverly Hills Cop, etc. At first, I wondered if this was supposed to be a spoof on these films, but as this movie went on, it became apparent that it was not. I feel like there was funny that they forgot to put in.
This movie was originally called” A Couple of Dicks”, which is what it felt like Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan were being. If I wanted to watch a burnt-out, lame ass version of John McClane from Die Hard and Tracy Jordan from 30 Rock take on Scarface from Half Baked, I would punch myself in the face. Bruce Willis has always been a great badass cop, as seen in Hostage and Die Hard but this was fucking pathetic. Every time he tried being badass in any way, they would just try some lame slapstick gag to distract you from the terrible story. Then there is Tracy Morgan. Does he have any other character besides Tracy Jordan. At first, bumbling moron partner seems fun, but then it becomes just plain sad. I cannot be the only person begging for him to grow up from his SNL days.
As every buddy cop movie seems to start off, these 2 get suspended for something stupid. Then the case that got them busted, became person ……LAME!!!!!!!! The story was lacking in any sort of originality. For no apparent reason, they had this super lame sub-plot involving Tracy Morgan’s wife, played by the beautiful and funny Rashida Jones. Movies only put these subplots in when they want you to forget about the rest of the movie. They tried to make you feel bad for our sidekick…. DID NOT WORK!!!! I was hoping she would leave him, just so I could actually laugh at him.
Over all, this film just plain sucked. Not only was it hard to watch in general, but the worst Kevin Smith movie ever, and I have seen Jersey Girl. Hopefully, he will never direct someone else’s movie again.
Also, I am trying to come up with a rating system. It’s not yet ready. I’m open for suggestions
